A little more on the origins of Single S.A.M.S.
My time as an active duty soldier in the United States Army is THE proudest time of my life. This time in my life was also an eye opening event. While I was serving I became painfully aware of a disparity in treatment between single and married soldiers. This included availability of tax free BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and food budgets for married personnel that were an impossibility for myself. Despite maintaining a spotless record, I, as an older and higher ranking soldier, could not avail myself of all the Army had to offer.
The disparity in treatment grew as my unit prepared to deploy to Iraq. In addition to combat pay, married individuals were given an additional $100 dollars a month in separation pay to compensate for child care regardless of the existence of children.
This personal nuisance became a rallying cry when I, as a proud big brother, watched my younger twin brothers deploy bearing the same disadvantages.
I love the United States Military. I sincerely feel that if my efforts are successful the military will benefit with both higher retention rates and a higher quality of personnel. That is why I have set out on one last mission to eliminate the unjust treatment of a significant portion of our armed forces:
Single S.A.M.S.
With your help and support we can make today’s military All It Can Be.
